A powerful earthquake struck southeastern Iran on December 26, 2003, killing over 30,000 people, injured and disabled 40,000, left 60,000 homeless and destroyed much of the city of Bam. The USGS National Earthquake information center is reported a magnitude of 6.6 for the quake, which was located just southwest of the city.  About 60 percent of the buildings in Bam were destroyed. The old quarter and a 2,000-year-old citadel (severely damaged by the earthquake) were built primarily of mud brick.    Sepehr Children Centers   The philosophy of care in the Sepehr Children Centers (SCC) is based on creating a home and family- style environment for the shelter of orphan children and adolescents. In such settings, children can live through their delicate early years within a warm environment permeated by family bonds. The SCCs are operating in five different locations in Bam, each housing 25 to 30 children. The SCC buildings have a combined build area of 5,000 square meters.   Adult Care Center (ACC)  ACC that consists of 10 units, provides housing for 120 elderlies of both genders in different units. The units are designed to create a family ambience. Each has 6 double bedrooms and living space around a central courtyard with access and view to the surrounding lush gardens. These units are strewn around a semi-covered pathway with panoramic view of the garden.  Â
Spinal Cord Disabled Care and Workshops Center (SDCC)Â SDCC would take care of Disableds and provide workshops for 150 paraplegic patients. The unit will also provide employment for up to 50 women heads of households who shall cooperate and provide assistance to the paraplegics. In relation to individuals with spinal cord injuries and women heads of households, so far two workshops, one for tailoring and the other for preparation of wire cables for tractors have begun operation since September 2007.
